Rising Damp

Often caused by the incorrect or failure of the DPC. Raised external ground levels can cause the originals Dpc to be bridged. The internally rising groundwater saturates walls and causes damage to building materials. The common signs of this are mould, peeling and blistering of paint, discolouration and damage to render. Some of the older properties have no DPC in place at all.

Penetrating Damp

Rainwater penetrating directly through the exterior walls and visibly showing internally through discolouration and damage to the paintwork such as blistering, peeling and flaking. Blocked and leaking gutters and downpipes often lead to penetrating damp and can easily be fixed. When the exterior wall or existing render isn’t weathertight damp will occur. This can be rectified by installing a new render system and certain weathering products.

Waterproof tanking

Basements and cellars sometimes need waterproofing to be made habitable. This can be done by applying a tanking slurry such as Vandex to the walls and ceilings. In some cases where its is not possible to stop the water ingress, a cavity drainage system would be installed where a
the membrane would be installed to redirect the water to run behind the wall and into to a drainage area keeping the room inside the bubble dry.

Condensation Control

It’s important not to mistake condensation for damp. Condensation is where moisture gathers on cold surfaces such as windows and walls where rooms aren’t ventilated properly. Its usually recognised but small black spots and can lead to mould growth. Rooms should have the proper ventilation and windows should be opened daily as well as the correct instalments of extractor fans and pacifier vents.
